picogen 0.1.2

As of 1st November 2008, this is the latest release of picogen. It's not a stable release, but it is at least as stable as the last stable release, version 0.1.

This time the renderer hasn't been disabled as with picogen 0.1, where only the heightmapping-tool "mkheightmap" was included. I have to admit that there's not enough documentation avaiable at the moment (at least not for the scene-scripting-part), but I encourage you to look into the wiki from time to time, and, of course, your help with the wiki is highly welcome!

At the moment there are three downloads available:

• GNU/Linux: picogen-0.1.2-x86-gnu+linux.tar.bz2
  
  Executable Binary, without installation routines.
  To enable "picogen" on your bash, create a symbolic link in /usr/bin, like:

          # ln -s <path+filename of picogen-binary> /usr/bin/picogen
          # exit
  
  
  
  
• Windows (Installer): picogen-0.1.2-install.exe
  
  Installer for picogen. It will create start menu shortcuts, some registry-entries (so the Windows-Builtin-Software-Manager can be used for uninstallation), and it will add the picogen-install-directoy to PATH, so that you can type in "picogen" into the cmd-box, never mind in which directory you are.
  
  Of course the Uninstaller will remove all cruft, if you want that.
  
  If you don't want your Windows-Registry and PATH be touched, try out the other Windows-Download (though you have to be in the picogen-directory, or type in the full path of picogen whenever you want to invoke it, or change your PATH by hand, so I recommend this Installer for Users of Windows)
  
• Windows (without Installer): picogen-0.1.2-x86-windows.zip
  
  Executable binary together with SDL.dll.
  To enable "picogen" on the commandline, add the directory of your picogen-download to PATH.

No new source code commits for a while ?

The last weeks I was really struggling with coding a small and minimalistic frontend for picogen. Most of the struggle was not the user interface itself but to get the binaries running on several, freshly installed GNU/Linux boxes.

I have to clean up the building procedures a bit, and then I think I will check in the new files (though they are not part of the picogen core, but will be part of the cvs-trunk).

Indeed, that release is command line, only. If you are on linux, there's a preview of the version 0.2 at http://picogen.org/get/0.2/ , including a fancy wxWidgets based frontend.
